Modernist Style
Croft Structural + Civil collaborated with Tony Pestana Construction Ltd on the complete renovation of a Grade II Listed building in Herne Hill, breathing new life into its historic fabric and preparing it for the next 100 years
Grade II Listed Building
The building’s solid walls had previously been treated with cement-based renders, which tend to trap moisture—both from external sources and from everyday internal activities such as cooking, bathing, and even breathing. This trapped moisture can lead to long-term issues like dampness and mould. To resolve this, Croft specified the use of breathable lime-based renders and mortars. These traditional materials allow moisture vapour to escape, enabling the building to "breathe" naturally. This approach helps to maintain the structural integrity of solid-walled buildings and supports a healthier indoor environment.
It was featured in the 1934 Ideal Home Exhibition, a prestigious platform that showcased cutting-edge domestic design to the British public.
Modern Living Standards
As part of the renovation, the property was sensitively upgraded to meet modern living standards while preserving its original features and listed charm. A new rear and side extension was also added, continuing a contemporary, modernist theme that complements the existing structure.
