With a little extra thought this rear extension was turned into something special. Jonathan Coombs Architect’s place a sweeping curve to the rear which shield the lines of the neighbours and maximised the garden views. A small canopy hides the glass facades from the heat of the summer sun.
The final project has smooth internal lines. The roller blinds fit neatly into the ceiling, and the curved glass doors slide just in front of them. These lines hide the complexity of structural gymnastics taking place behind: curved steels carry the façade glazing, with beam cut to fit around the roller blinds.
This project has been shortlisted for the London LABC Building Excellence Award 2019, in the Best Extension or Alteration to an Existing Home category.
Fingers crossed; we won the same category in 2013 with a project in Dulwich.
