Adding life back into a 1960's Building

A full renovation of the building was undertaken to bring a new vibrant feel to an old 1960’s building. The front of the building was extended to increase the amount of floor space available for letting and provide a modern reception area.

Concrete cube testing

Croft provided the structural advice and details to complete the M&E alterations of the work. It was necessary to place sizable holes through the floors to allow for duct openings. Croft Structural Engineers Ltd were asked to inspect and determine whether the openings would need strengthening. Various routes were used to find information about the building. Unfortunately neither the client, building owner nor Croydon Building Control had any information on the building and its construction. Therefore, it was necessary to complete physical testing of the slabs.

Strengthening solution

Croft has vast experience in organising such testing and commissioned Sandbergs to undertake ultra sound and Ferro scanning. In addition the concrete was tested for cube strength in the laboratory. We took this information and provided an innovative strengthening solution to the existing slabs. Carbon fibre plates were used to strengthen the slabs local to the openings. These light weight plates are glued into position. The overall disturbance to the tenants was kept to a minimum with good design and technical knowledge.
