People often ask why they need engineer's drawings when they already have architect drawings.

Our drawings are vital at the outset of a project. The contractor often solely uses our drawings to ensure the foundations, walls, roof etc are in the correct position. Our details break the elements down and remove the information that isn't necessary at the start.

Our engineers form the pivotal role of ensuring the design is correctly implemented. We review the architect's plans and details to ensure that our structure is correct, and relay the information to the contractor who is often too busy with the daily running of site. With up to 30% of costs in the ground it is vital that we complete these sections economically.

Residential Engineering Services

Typically, people’s most valued asset is their home. Making alterations and changes requires much forethought and there is one chance to get it right. Our approach is to help you though the process as smoothly as possible.

Our approach is:

• Arrange an initial site visit to discuss the works, to allow a fee and scope of works to be agreed.
• Complete a site survey of the property. During the survey the engineer will discuss various issues:
  • How will the walls be removed, and where will temporary propping be required.
  • Party Walls issues and other implications on neighbours.
  • Inspect the property to determine whether there are repairs that should be discussed.
• Produce structural plans either from architectural plans provided or a dimension survey. From these the structural information can be shown.
• Undertake the structural design. This is why people really employ us. Every element is calculated before it is placed on a drawing.
  • Typically there are around 15 members in a standard loft conversion.
  • Every home we complete is tailored for unique qualities to each.
• Make an assessment of the impact of the local ground conditions. First from the geological maps, but it is often necessary to excavate trial pits or arrange for full soil testing.
• In London, trees affect the soil and all our staff have attended courses at Kew to help in tree recognition.
• Produce plans and details.
• Compile and issue information for Part A of the building Regulations
• Help with the tender process. Croft has a large database of contractors.
• Visit site and inspect the works.
