Rear Extension - Clapham Common SW4
The client's aim was to enlarge and modernise their kitchen and dining rooms to create one large open living space. To achieve this the rear and flank wall of the house was removed on the ground floor. The existing garage was converted into living space, complete with bay, to mimic the other properties within the street.
Structurally we removed the supporting rear wall at ground floor level creating two openings one internal and the other for a set of sliding folding doors into the garden. Our new structure had to consider and account for existing steelwork already within the wall.
Quartet Architecture are a professional firm with an attention to detail which we applaud. Our mission was to fit the new structure within a very limited space, avoiding downstand beams. Croft created a bespoke compound steel section strong enough to fit, whilst still allowing for the brickwork detail arches over the doorway. The section created was a specialised welded section of varying plate thickness and widths to deal with the site requirements.
It was enjoyable to spend the time and effort providing a bespoke solution. No job is ever 'small' the technical knowledge within the firm can be brought to bear, skills learnt in bridge design may well be employed on a kitchen extension!
