Complete Rear Wall Removal
The client had a scheme to remove the rear of the property, but a column was required in the middle of the room. Croft Structural Engineers took the project and redesigned the steelwork and removed the column.
Our calculations showed that the clear span may result in excessive deflection. Cracking would occur to the existing first floor masonry. Obviously this is why the previous engineer had used a column. Croft Structural Engineers approached the problem from a different angle. We designed the movement to the upper floor out.
Special jacking schemes were designed for the contractor to complete. The large steel was bent on site. The beam was large and heavy, and the builders on site were sceptical that it would bend as predicted. They attached the jacks and the steelwork deflected the 20mm specified.
The client was happy and the builders were impressed.
