Pylon Design by the
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
Croft worked with Paper Project Architects to develop a fully functional scheme and design for a Pylon design competition organised on behalf of the Department of Energy & Climate Change and National Grid.
We saw the competition as a challenge to rethink ‘The Electricity Pylon’, one of the most crucial but controversial features of modern Britain. The competition gave us the opportunity to explore and understand the scale of the energy challenges ahead of us all.
Pylons must be more than functional. They traverse the best landscapes Great Britain has to offer: As such they must showcase the greatness of ideals within these Isles and to be more sympathetic to the landscapes they wander through.
Due to their use Pylons are large structures and they are essential to place them in remote areas to achieve the network that the fabric of our society relies upon. Our approach was to provide a structure that helped the pylon to sit better within its environment and provide an image that embodies the UK’s principles.
