Additional Storey to Residential Building
With space at a premium the owner of the top floor flat had negotiated amendments in the lease to add a further storey to the roof. The design required a modern aluminium clad extension to be added to the roof.
Croft Structural Engineers Ltd first completed an appraisal of the existing building and determined the areas that required strengthening. The weakest link was determined to be the ground floor's lack of resistance to wind loads .
Croft Structural Engineers Ltd undertook a design to place a rigid concrete ring beam on the top of the building to transfer the new wind loads away from the weak rear of the building, and transfer them to the stiffer front.
The design was duly checked by the free holder, Hackney Building Control, and two separate Party wall surveyors and details agreed for construction.
Unfortunately due to funding the project is awaiting construction.
